Ingredients

  • 2 packages (14 oz each) smoked sausage
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon dijon mustard

Method

  1. Set your oven temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly coat a 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
  2. Cut the smoked sausage into 1-inch thick slices.
  3. Combine the sliced sausage, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, and dijon mustard directly in the baking dish and mix until evenly coated.
  4. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 45 minutes, stirring a couple of times during cooking to ensure all sausage pieces are well covered with sauce.
  5. Once the sauce bubbles and thickens with a deeper color, remove from oven.
  6. Serve the sausage bites hot with toothpicks, perfect as an appetizer or alongside kid-friendly dishes like mac and cheese.
  7. To keep warm for parties or game day, bake as usual, then transfer to a slow cooker set to WARM for 2 to 3 hours to maintain heat and flavor.

Notes

  • This recipe yields 12 servings, ideal as an appetizer or side dish. Nutritional values may vary depending on the brand of barbecue sauce and smoked sausage used. Feel free to use any smoked sausage variety you prefer, such as cheddar, jalapeno cheddar, beef, turkey, or cuban style. For a no-slice shortcut, substitute lil' smokies instead of slicing regular smoked sausage. Choose a barbecue sauce that suits your taste — spicy or sweet — as it strongly influences the final flavor. To add heat, you can mix in red cayenne pepper, chili flakes, or hot sauce along with the other ingredients.
