Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk (whole milk works best for creaminess)
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (adds depth without overpowering)
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup (I use Campbell’s for the classic flavor)
  • 4 cups green beans (fresh, frozen, or canned; thawed if frozen)
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions (French’s brand is traditional; reserve some for garnish on top)

Method

  1. If using frozen green beans, make sure they are fully thawed and drained; for fresh beans, trim and slice into 2-inch pieces, then quickly boil in salted water before draining; canned beans just need to be well drained.
  2. Heat your oven to 350°F, or get your air fryer ready at the same temperature.
  3. Divide the crispy fried onions into two parts: about 2/3 cup for mixing in the casserole and 1/3 cup to top it off later.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, and soy sauce until the mixture is smooth and uniform.
  5. Add the prepared green beans, the 2/3 cup of fried onions, and ground black pepper to the creamy mixture, folding gently to coat the beans evenly without crushing the onions.
  6. Transfer this green bean mixture to a 9×9 inch baking dish, smoothing the top layer evenly.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or air fry for 10 minutes, until bubbly and heated through.
  8. Take the casserole out, stir gently to mix the sauce evenly, then sprinkle the reserved 1/3 cup of fried onions on top.
  9. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for another 5 minutes or air fry for 2 minutes until the onions turn golden brown and crispy, giving a delightful crunchy topping.

Notes

  • For best results, use whole milk to keep the casserole creamy. Reserving the fried onions until the end ensures a crisp topping. This dish pairs wonderfully with holiday roasts and can be prepared ahead and baked just before serving.
