Ingredients

  • 1 small head Cabbage cut into thick slices
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil for brushing
  • 1 pound Ground Beef or Turkey or ground chicken or plant-based options
  • 1 medium Onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 large Egg optional, for binding
  • 1 cup Cheese for sprinkling on top

Method

  1. Set your oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) to start warming up.
  2. Cut the small cabbage head into thick half-inch slices and coat each slice well on both sides with olive oil.
  3. In a big bowl, blend together your choice of ground meat, minced onion, garlic, smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Stir in the egg if you want a firmer patty.
  4. Shape the seasoned meat mixture into patties sized to fit each cabbage slice, then place each patty on top of a cabbage slice.
  5. Place the cabbage and meat patties on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for around 25 minutes until the burgers are cooked through.
  6. Optionally, scatter cheese over the patties and switch the oven to broil, cooking for another 3 to 5 minutes just until the cheese melts.
  7. Take out the burgers and serve them up, optionally garnishing with fresh parsley if you like.

Notes

  • Keep any leftover cabbage burgers sealed in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze them for as long as 3 months.
